When was Zweitbox founded?
Zweitbox was founded in September 2025.
How many sites do you currently have?
We currently have two sites under contract but none open yet. Our first site, Zweitbox Aachen-Richterich, is due to open in November 2026. The second site, also in Aachen, is planned for March 2027.
What type of storage do you offer?
We offer outdoor self-storage using converted 20-foot shipping containers. Each container provides around 14 m² or 33 m³ of storage space. We convert the containers so they suit self-storage well: they are lit, ventilated, dry and weatherproof. Our customers can drive up to their own container by car at any time and open it with their phone. This makes the containers well suited to furniture, files, motorbikes and much more. As we offer outdoor storage, our concept is also a particularly affordable alternative to classic indoor self-storage, while still offering comparatively generous space and direct drive-up access.

How many storage units will there be?
At our first site in Aachen-Richterich we will offer 100 units. Of these, 85 will be empty and 15 fitted with a shelving system, so customers can choose according to their needs. 110 containers are planned for the second site. At each site we also offer our Sharebox, where customers can borrow practical items like a ramp or a broom and buy packing material and other accessories. This works simply via a QR code.
Which Kinnovis features are especially useful for you, or why did you choose Kinnovis?
From my experience founding a co-living chain, I learned how important the choice of tech stack, and especially property management software, really is. Building it out can take a long time, and switching from one provider to another later can be very complicated, especially once you have already built a portfolio with multiple sites.
My biggest lesson has been to choose software that keeps evolving rather than standing still. We live in a digital age that is moving incredibly fast. Choosing software that might work today but won’t meet tomorrow’s requirements is, in my view, one of the biggest mistakes you can make.
Kinnovis already offers AI-based solutions today, for example, and has a very modern interface and approach. That was one of the biggest benefits for me. I also like the modular approach and the many integration options, for example with lock providers, insurers, payment providers and contract providers.
As we value automation highly, good and efficient accounting processes were also important to us. We wanted good DATEV integration so invoice management would be as simple as possible to manage. That was another particularly convincing point for us with Kinnovis.
How has Kinnovis influenced your processes?
We are of course still ahead of opening, so we can’t yet speak of a concrete improvement to existing processes. From the outset, though, it has been important to us that new customers can book and then check in entirely independently.
We want to automate the entire user journey, from booking through check-in and first opening the container, all the way to the final opening, checkout, move-out and handover. For that we need software that supports this level of automation. We’re confident that Kinnovis, combined with other relevant tools, is the right solution for us.
How do you feel Kinnovis will affect your bottom line?
We hope to build a very lean setup. Through highly automated processes we want to keep expensive staff costs, as well as costs for service freelancers or agencies, as low as possible.
At the same time, on the revenue side, it was important to us to have a good booking portal that customers can navigate quickly and use to sign a contract easily. I think it’s great that Kinnovis is so modular here, letting us put together the booking journey to suit our own requirements.
Which feature has the biggest impact for you?
The booking portal has the biggest impact for us, because it takes a lot of work off our sales team. Customers can choose the right site and container themselves, book directly and check in independently. This automates a significant part of the sales and onboarding process.
How did you find getting set up with Kinnovis?
I found the onboarding process very smooth and simple. The people at Kinnovis were very helpful and were pretty much always able to find a solution to our questions or challenges. At the same time, it was always clear to us who to reach out to.
What type of self-storage business would you recommend Kinnovis to?
I would recommend Kinnovis to any self-storage business in principle. Companies in German-speaking markets looking to scale with self-storage in particular should definitely take a look at Kinnovis.
